From our December 2023  CyberAdvisor Letter

2023 - Changes and Recommendations

Hi there,

As we close the chapter on 2023, I want to take a moment to reflect on the transformative year we've experienced in the realm of cybersecurity. Through our monthly editions of 'The CyberAdvisor,' we've navigated the rapidly evolving landscape together, adapting to changes and embracing innovations that have significantly impacted how we protect our digital lives. This is our mission every year, and 2023 has indeed emerged as a landmark year, presenting us with unprecedented challenges and extraordinary opportunities to excel in our commitments like never before.

December's edition of 'The CyberAdvisor' will comprehensively review these significant changes of 2023, and highlight crucial action items for our readers.

A Year Marked by Change

This year has unequivocally underscored the rapidly accelerating pace of change in technology and cybersecurity, a dynamic evolution we have been diligently preparing our clients for since 2013. The transformations we've witnessed extend far beyond mere technological advancements; they echo deeply within the fabric of society. As your dedicated cybersecurity partner, we have consistently stayed at the forefront of these developments to commitment arm you with the most advanced tools and comprehensive knowledge, ensuring your digital assets and identity are safe in this ever-changing landscape.

As 2023 has shown, and now with the rapid advancement of AI and the approach of quantum computing, the need for sharp critical thinking skills has become more crucial than ever. In this fast-paced era of technological change, honing these skills is essential for navigating the complexities of our increasingly digital world.

Key Changes in 2023

Here is what we want you to know from our strategic advice and recommended action steps for personal cybersecurity in 2023:

Switch Password Managers:

In early 2023, in response to the emerging issues with LastPass, we advised a strategic shift to 1Password as your password management solution. This decision has proven to be prescient, as LastPass has continued to face challenges, while 1Password has not only maintained but strengthened its reputation. Its application and overall brand are now widely acclaimed as the gold standard in the realm of password management. Maybe you say 'ugh' to the notion, like I did, but switching isn't that bad, especially with a coach that has done it hundreds of times before.  Jan.15th - "Last Days for Last Pass."

Change Your Email Provider:

Email communication serves as the hub of our digital lives. This year, we advised a shift from Rackspace’s aging IMAP technology to Microsoft’s “Exchange” email platform for its superior security features and privacy protections. This move, called “migration,” was crucial in ensuring that your personal and professional communications remain confidential and secure from cyber threats for many years ahead.  Jun.21st - "AI, Fact v. Fiction, and Email."

We strongly recommend migrating from Backspace to Exchange. If you have not yet done so, we are increasing our sense of urgency to this recommendation. Please contact us.

The Key Recommendations We Made to our Clients in 2023

From the areas of innovations and advancements in 2023, we want you to know about:

The "Private Internet":

One of the most exciting developments this year was the introduction of a service to create a "private internet."  This groundbreaking technology offers unprecedented security, privacy, and protection, safeguarding your personal information and technology against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. Now, the service comes with agent software too so laptops can connect remotely and on public Wi-Fi to the private internet.  Apr.12th - "Your Own Private Internet" and "Managed Network Security."

AI and ChatGPT:

Our exploration into the realm of artificial intelligence this year notably included integrating ChatGPT as a personal “knowledge companion.” This innovative AI tool heralds a new era in efficient information management, decision-making support, and heightened productivity, all achieved within the framework of rigorous cybersecurity standards.

Importantly, we encourage our clients to incorporate AI into their daily routines. The benefits of AI integration are manifold, some of which become increasingly apparent only after regular use. This proactive engagement with AI technologies promises to enhance various aspects of both personal and professional life.  See "coaching," above.

Looking Ahead

As we step into 2024, we remain committed to keeping you informed and protected in this ever-changing digital world. We will continue to monitor emerging trends, evaluate new technologies, and provide you with actionable insights and recommendations.
