A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a tool that encrypts your internet traffic and hides your activity from anyone who might be watching on the same network. Think of it as a secure, private tunnel that your data travels through instead of out in the open.
Most people have heard of VPNs. Far fewer know what they actually do, or more importantly, what they don’t do. And that gap between perception and reality is where a lot of false confidence lives.
When you connect to the internet without a VPN, your data travels from your device to websites and services across networks you don’t control. Anyone with access to those networks — your internet service provider, the operator of a public Wi-Fi network, or someone running a packet-sniffing tool at your local coffee shop — can potentially see what you’re doing.
A VPN encrypts that traffic before it leaves your device. Your data travels through a private server operated by the VPN provider before reaching its destination. To anyone watching the network, it looks like encrypted noise rather than readable activity.
This is genuinely useful in certain situations, particularly when you’re using public Wi-Fi such as in hotels, airports, restaurants, or conference centers. Those networks are often unsecured, and a VPN adds a meaningful layer of protection in those environments.
A VPN is most valuable when you’re on a network you don’t trust. At home, on your own secured network, the calculation is different.
Here’s where a lot of people’s understanding diverges from reality.
A VPN does not protect your devices from malware or viruses. It does not secure the other devices on your home network. It does not prevent phishing attacks. It does not protect your email. It does not monitor for threats already inside your network. It does not replace antivirus software, endpoint protection, or comprehensive network security.
A VPN protects the traffic traveling between your device and the internet. That’s it. Everything outside that specific function, your devices, your home environment, your email, your identity, is outside what a VPN was designed to address.
The misconception we see most often: someone has a VPN and feels like their cybersecurity is handled. It’s one useful tool. It is not a complete solution.
Free VPNs are worth approaching with significant caution. Running a VPN service requires servers, infrastructure, and ongoing costs. When a service is free, the question is always: how are they covering those costs?
In many cases, the answer is your data. Free VPN providers have been documented logging user activity, selling browsing data to third parties, and in some cases, serving as the very kind of surveillance they claim to protect against.
This doesn’t mean all free VPNs are malicious. But it does mean the due diligence required before trusting one with your traffic is substantial. For anyone managing sensitive financial, legal, or personal information online, a reputable paid VPN is a far more reliable starting point than a free alternative.
The honest answer is: it depends on what you’re trying to protect and where you’re doing it.
If you regularly work from hotels, airports, or other public locations then yes, a VPN is a sensible tool for those environments. If you’re handling sensitive financial or business communications while traveling, it adds a meaningful layer of protection on untrusted networks.
If you’re asking whether a VPN alone makes you protected online the answer is no. Not by a long stretch.

The better question isn’t ‘do I have a VPN?’ It’s ‘what does my complete setup actually cover and where are the gaps?’
